My mother has recently taken a teaching position in Einsiedeln, otherwise known as This Place With This Absolutely Enormous Cathedral That Must Have Cost A Great Deal Of Money (Money That, My Mother Never Fails To Remind Me, Could Have Been Spent To Feed The Myriad Hungry) To Build And That The Dalai Lama Visited Recently.
It's a pretty long alternate name.
Anyway, what this means is that, twice a week, for six hours at a time, the population of this house consists of me and Siobhan. Which is cool! I get to take care of my little sister. Not only does this build a stronger bond between her and I, one that I'll be very thankful for when I can't make bail in later life, but I've also learned a lot. For example.
1 - Fourteen months is apparently old enough to decide that you only want to eat meat.
1a - Or that you only want to eat kara-age.
1b - And that until you're eating kara-age, you're going to cry and scream at the top of your lungs, a condition only rectified by being cuddled by your brother at all times, even if this causes problems vis-a-vis the fact that your brother cannot, in fact, finish making the kara-age while cuddling you.
2 - Apparently, a lack of functional breasts does not actually hurt when babysitting an unweaned baby, as she can get along quite fine without breast milk thank you very much. The More You Know!
3 - Babies cannot put themselves to sleep. They need to fall asleep naturally, in an extremely relaxing environment: examples include soon after a hot bath; being breastfed; or going for a long walk.
3a - Seriously, what's with that?
4 - I have a bizarre power - to wit, if I put a baby to sleep in her crib, and she fully wakes up during the process, and I decide to sing her a lullaby, she will fall asleep within the first three words. I expect to be picked up by Professor X within the week.
5 - Dirty nappies do not occur nearly so much as you might think. Even throwing yoghurt everywhere isn't hard to clean up. Probably the most difficult thing to deal with is when a fragile baby decides that she's got to be held at all times, and cannot be put down for even five seconds.
5a - With a baby around, one must be on call at all times. Not to put too fine a point on it - one must watch one's fluid intake.
6 - Babies? Weird.
That is all.
